Are Mumford & Sons really still as divisive as they used to be? Back in the eras of Sigh No More and Babel, you couldn’t move for opinions on either extreme—how they were a fresh take on indie music that ushered in stomp-clap folk’s ubiquity, or how ‘farmers with banjos’ being so extensively pedestalled was a telltale sign of alternative music’s decline. Now, though, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who gets too worked up by them. Not that they haven’t continued to leverage their early momentum—the Manchester stop on this UK tour finds them in the country’s biggest venue after all—but considering that RUSHMERE only came out in March and they’re already following it up with Prizefighter next February, it’s not the traditional rockstar path. Nevertheless, Mumford & Sons remain a huge commodity, and joined by alt-country star Sierra Ferrell, they’ve still got more than enough momentum to prove why. Ben Whitehurst headed to the Co-Op Live to check it out.
