The longevity of Death Cab For Cutie has made it feel like an event every time they come around. They’re approaching 30 years as a band now, getting a foothold among the linchpins of emo and indie-rock in the early 2000s, and still going strong today. That’s not some empty platitude, either; I Built You A Tower was released mere months ago and immediately felt like a worthwhile inclusion in their catalogue.

Maybe it’s the lack of flash or grandiosity that puts them in this higher echelon. You could call them a legacy act now (no pejoratives in there, promise), and yet, when they do roll back around, you’re getting a display of great music that stands entirely on its own merits. To have them bring that to some pretty big venues on this newest UK tour, then, really is a warming sight. They’ve got Pool Kids alongside them, too, another band who’ve been doing some great things in the indie spaces that Death Cab For Cutie helped cultivate. For their show in Bristol’s Project Building, Ross Peacey headed down to catch it all.
