Back in 2000, singer-songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Damon Gough—going under the pseudonym Badly Drawn Boy—released his debut album The Hour Of Bewilderbeast. A quarter of a century later, it’s become one of the most prized releases in the contemporary indie canon. A sprawling, hour-plus opus of indie-rock and chamber-pop, the acclaim it’s garnered is far from insignificant. Even at the time, it left enough of the right people enamoured to see it win the 2000 Mercury Prize.
It truly has become the crowning jewel in Gough’s catalogue. Even with eight subsequent Badly Drawn Boy albums under his belt, the weight generated by his debut is just too inescapable. Thus, a run of shows to celebrate its 25th birthday seemed inevitable, free of support slots and accompanied by a second set of succeeding Badly Drawn Boy gems. On the second of two nights at Manchester’s Aviva Studios, Ben Whitehurst headed over to catch what, to some, might be the above-all show of the year.
