Although they’ve never been the biggest band, there’s an overflowing personality in Empire Of The Sun. Appropriate for their name, they’re a brighter, more extravagant act within synthpop, both musically and visually. That’s where so much of their appeal lies, in how colourful and elaborate their aesthetic is, drawing from multiple cultures and traditions to make this feel as much a visual art piece as a musical performance. And while, to the general public, Walking On A Dream and We Are The People are the exhaustive limits of their catalogue, there’s a wealth of good stuff to be found here, given the right circumstances. Among the picturesque grounds of Halifax’s Piece Hall, those circumstances are certainly right this evening, captured for us by Ben Whitehurst.
