It’s little wonder that James Marriott has become the indie-pop powerhouse that he currently is. Originating in the UK YouTube commentary space will effectively guarantee a sizable fanbase as a baseline; supplementing that with an equally online-friendly form of pop music ensures the expansion. Critically, though, Marriott’s work has been much more—for lack of a better term—‘serious’ than most YouTuber music, totally autonomous of parody or god-awful comedy, instead fitting in a mould not too dissimilar from The 1975 in appeal. The fact it’s spawned this monster of a UK and European tour would suggest its efficacy, as would the dedicated legion that’s ensured the best possible success rate.
