It’s an interesting time for King Princess, currently. As is standard for any number of queer-inclusive artists, the buzz around Mikaela Strauss on a ground level is nowhere close to slowing down. What really stands out, though, is the release of her newest album Girl Violence through Section1, a joint venture with Partisan Records that, in theory, puts Strauss on a footing with such names as PJ Harvey, Geese, Laura Marling and many more of the most acclaimed, high-end artists currently working. It’s a useful spot to be in, considering how King Princess’ indie-pop has often trended a bit more daring and creative, with clearly enough of a positive reception to it. Manchester’s New Century Hall is far from a dive, and touring at this size could represent a lot worth keeping an eye on going forward. Dean Cavanagh headed down to check it out.
