It’s been 20 years since Black Rebel Motorcycle Club released their third album Howl. It’s also been seven since they released anything at all; their last full body of work was Wrong Creatures all the way back in 2018. And yet, you’ll notice that tonight’s Manchester show is a remarkably full one. It’s actually rather impressive when Black Rebel Motorcycle Club rarely feel like the recipients of a nostalgia-lathering, but footfall speaks for itself, at the end of the day. Maybe it’s the pervasive result of the cool rock ‘n’ roll image that was theirs to play with in the garage-rock halcyon days of the 2000s. You wouldn’t deny that when Howl is still a fun listen to this day, with a lot more variety in tactic than the sizzle-and-sneer of other arms of their catalogue. The fact that still holds up, too, though, is a testament to BRMC’s long-lasting appeal, caught for us by Dean Cavanagh.
