Alongside The Reytons, The Lathums are currently the gold standard for what do-it-yourself indie can achieve in the UK. The difference is that they’re fresh off the major label machine, releasing their third in Matter Does Not Define in February through Modern Sky (a phenomenon of an indie label in its own right), and still scoring a Top 10 hit with it. It’s undoubtedly cool that things like this can happen, and even if a band whose most predominant comparisons are the Arctic Monkeys and The Smiths aren’t shaking the narrative to its core, it still would’ve been unthinkable so many years ago. Not only that, but The Lathums find themselves tonight in Manchester’s O2 Apollo, the antithesis of what independent grind is perceived to look like. Ben Whitehurst headed over to catch the show, from a band whose fortunes seem nothing close to over.
