This year marks the 30th anniversary of Supergrass’ debut I Should Coco, an album that left an indelible mark on the Britpop era in which it was released. Granted, it was never to be as magnitudinous as the Blur / Oasis battle that raged around the same time, but the marks are still there. You probably know the artwork, the threefold close-ups of the band members’ mugs. Failing that, you almost certainly know Alright, whose video led to Actual Steven Spielberg proposing a TV series about the band, à la The Monkees.

That never happened, obviously, but the legacy of Supergrass has remained strong all the same. If not squarely for the band (who haven’t released new music since 2008’s Diamond Hoo Ha), then certainly for frontman Gaz Coombes and his earned spot among classic indie’s fruit-bearing soloists. Now, though, it’s as special as occasions get for this band, beginning their run in Liverpool’s Olympia with Sports Team in tow, themselves only weeks away from a new album. Ben Whitehurst headed down to for us to catch a show that’s so much more than just alright.
