Is there a band in modern rock more fit to headline an event called Rock N Roll Circus than Queens Of The Stone Age? They’ve certainly got the acumen for it, sporting a catalogue as freewheeling and diverse as theirs is. Even breaking that down, you could argue that both extremes—the crossover fare etched into the contemporary rock canon, and the weirder, out-there swerves pulling from stoner- and desert-rock—fit that bill entirely. For an event with literal circus performers among its attractions, the hip-swinging, always-on sizzle of Queens Of The Stone Age is as welcome as ever.

Alongside them today is a bevy of talent covering a pleasantly broad variety of niches. It’s worth noting, in that regard, how other performers over the weekend like James and Bryan Adams encompass the far more approachable ‘family day out’ side of things. For Queens Of The Stone Age—given headline slots on Wednesday and Thursday with individual bills across each—it feels as though things have been allowed to get stranger to match up. Therefore, on this first day, Viagra Boys and Fat Dog are the twin proprietors of gonzo-punk placed high; Savages’ Jehnny Beth delivers artsy post-punk ahead of her new album You Heartbreaker, You; indie-rock and noisy post-punk comes from The Bug Club and Fuzz Lightyear respectively; and bounce pioneer Big Freedia kicks off proceedings in fittingly raucous stead. Ben Whitehurst headed over to Sheffield for us to catch the wonders of the circus unfold.
