Back in 2023 at Glastonbury Festival, Lewis Capaldi played what would be his final show for almost two years. It was a rather sad moment too, unable to finish the set due to a flare-up of his Tourette’s Syndrome before a physical and mental heath-focused hiatus. He actually returned to Glastonbury this year to perform a secret set, spun by many outlets as him finishing where he left off, and judging by the public reception, that very well seems true.
Right now, Capaldi’s musical presence feels just as big as it ever was. When he broke in the second half of the 2010s, he was the relatable, everyman popstar, with music that was never particularly complicated, but struck a chord with a lot of people thanks to its earnestness. There’s a reason that Someone You Loved has become embedded in the canon of British pop to this day. And thus, it’s little surprise that his, upon his grand return to the arenas that Capaldi can comfortably call his own, the entire run sold out well in advance. It’s a big deal for many, and even if the music itself doesn’t particularly appeal, the story of a likable, normal guy conquering his demons and reclaiming his A-list status is inspiring. So, with Skye Newman and Aaron Rowe in tow, Ben Whitehurst headed to Sheffield for the opening night of one of 2025’s most anticipated comebacks.
