As easy as it can seem on its face to bundle Sofia Isella among TikTok’s ever-growing crop of alt-pop singer-songwriters (with famous family connections, no less…), something’s a bit different in this case. Sonically, Isella isn’t just reheating multiple-times-over leftovers as everyone else, instead embracing a darker, more ethereal, often more sinister palette. The closest artist it comes to is Ethel Cain, who also seems completely at odds with the pop scenes she finds herself amongst, but manages to thrive anyway. Thus, it’s no shock that Isella’s current UK tour is doing as well as it is. Her last wasn’t even a year ago, yet this one feels so much bigger and more important, key in establishing artistic presence that goes well beyond a snippet on your phone. She can undoubtedly get there, too, as captured by Maryleen at Manchester’s sold-out Albert Hall.
