Forget being overwhelmed by the prospect of two star-making turns; Lauren Mayberry makes it look like second nature. Her more well-known one has her fronting CHVRCHES, one of the premier synthpop acts the UK has spawned since the turn of the millennium. Now, though, she’s embarking on a journey of her own, with last year’s solo debut Vicious Creature taking its cues from alt-pop, ‘90s singer-songwriters, and a generally more eclectic pop palette. It’s gone a little under the radar as is customary for a December release, but with CHVRCHES shows being a little thin on the ground—i.e. none at all since 2023—catching Mayberry once again in her performing element is definitely not something to grumble at. Maryleen headed over to Manchester’s show to catch one of these standout returns in modern indie-pop.
