What is there to say about The Charlatans that hasn’t already? They were one of the cornerstones of Britpop and the Madchester scene in the ‘90s, enduring for almost four decades now and still pulling their weight as indie icons to this day. That’s across multiple avenues, too; the band are still as beloved as it gets, but it’d be wrong not to note how much frontman Tim Burgess has done for music exploration as a whole with his pandemic-era listening parties. And thus, there’s something a little special about them returning to Manchester on this run in particular, forgoing any support acts for two full sets that span The Charlatans’ extensive catalogue. With an even bigger tour coming next year, slowing down just doesn’t seem to be in the cards for one of Manchester’s extensive throng of musical heroes. Dean Cavanagh headed down to the Academy to catch it all.
