Should you really class Bat Sabbath as a ‘tribute band’? The stigma of weekend warriors who couldn’t hack it as a ‘real’ band demonstrably doesn’t apply here. Rather, it’s something more unique—the alter ego of Cancer Bats moonlighting as a Black Sabbath cover band, for no reason other than they really, really want to.
Even for this sidiest of side-ventures, they’ve seen enough acclaim come their way to warrant full tours. They always seem to do well in the UK anyway (they’ll often be tucked away on a festival lineup somewhere), and a decent-sized run like this only seals it. Plus, it’s a chance to see Cancer Bats, one of the premium live bands in hardcore, on a bit of a different tack; you’d be a fool to pass up on it. Joined by fellow Canadian riffsters Black Mastiff and amphibious doom-mongers Froglord, Ross Peacey headed down to Bristol’s Electric to check it out.
