By this time next year, don’t be surprised if mary in the junkyard are the cool-kid indie band that everyone’s raving about. They’re already on their way, with current single this is my california finding its expected feet among the tastemaker spheres. And it’s really no wonder considering the music they make—ramshackle, off-kilter, often downbeat indie-rock that’s on its hands and knees to be added to a Radio 6 Music playlist. But the spark is already there; the likelihood is they will make it. YES’ Pink Room doesn’t quite carry the same unearth-‘em-as-soon-as-they’ve-begun-existence exclusivity as its 60-cap basement, but there’s still no better place for mary in the junkyard to get their foot in the door. Ben Whitehurst headed over to catch them before the buzz really kicks off.
